Avengers Lego Figures Unveiled
A closer look at the bad guys tooBack in late January, we got a closer look at the Avengers Lego figures, but weren't allowed to show you any pictures. Hulk in brown chinos, yes; a miniature plastic Loki trapped in a glass cage of emotion, no.Today, the official images for Lego's Avengers line have been formally unveiled, and they're interesting to both films fans and lovers of small toys.Acouple of key scenes are Lego-ified, notably the trapped Loki moment previously described, as well as the Quinjet itself and, um, a Shield 4x4.But more interesting than that are the up-close-and-plastic shots of the as-yet undefined bad guys helping Loki in his dastardly plans. Some have suggested the Atlanteans, but we sincerely doubt that; others suggest that the Skrulls are the baddos, despite official confirmation to the contrary.Whatever they actually are, they seem to be almost reptilian and/or robotic, which would fit (in a way) with what we saw in the trailer, in terms of (the big bad who could well turn out to be) Fin Fang Foom.Oh, and Wolverine, Deadpool and Magneto also appear! Not a spoiler there, we're guessing, just a couple of X-Men characters who are being released in Lego form at the same time. Logan battling Loki? Probably only going to happen on your kitchen table, bub.{Avengers Lego Stills}Anyway, take a look and let us know what you think. Are these Lego plot points a spoiler too far?Let us know in the comment box below.AvengersAssemble - as the official title now reads in the UK - is out in the UK on April 26.

Amazing Spider-Man Clip Online
Peter Parker denied access! The promotional campaign for The Amazing Spider-Man is now in full swing, what with the massive, multi-country footage screening and all manner of trailers, photos and posters online. Now the first full clip has arrived, and it's full of everything you might expect from the adventures of Peter Parker. Take a look below.Everything, of course, assuming you expect him to appear in the lanky form of Andrew Garfield being hassled at the door to Gwen Stacey's building by an officious Noo Yawk doorman (played by John Scurti, who has usually been found getting into trouble alongside fellow Amazing Spider-Man actor Denis Leary on TV's Rescue Me).Yes, if you're hoping for explosions, web-slinging, roaring lizard beasts or the lovely Emma Stone as Gwen, you're better off checking out the trailer again. Still, it's a good indication of the humour that will run through the film. This footage first cropped up on the film's viral site, which has been encouraging graffiti artists (okay, it's just a stunt) and promises more goodies to come. Hopefully that will include more tantalising footage. And if you want to see the whole film in one sitting, you'll have to wait until July 4. Which is the day we declare our independence! From... not being able to see The Amazing Spider-Man in cinemas. So that's nice.

Academy awards: Mess Tailor Soldier Spy Peter Straughan
Tim Adler is really a cause of AwardsLine Peter Straughan would sit in the loft office typing away around the script forTinker Tailor Solider Spy hearing jazz on earphones, while downstairs his wife and writing partner Bridget OConnor seemed to be writing the script, in line with the best-selling spy novel by John le Carr. They'd email one another drafts, looking at one anothers act as they plowed on. OConnor, a prize-winning dramatist, found writing lonely and loved working together together with her husband. That co-written script has become nominated to have an Modified Script Oscar after collecting wins in the BAFTAs and also the Online Film Experts Society among its many nominations. Straughan and the wife spent annually focusing on the Mess Tailor script when tragedy struck: OConnor died in September 2010of cancer at 49, 1 week before filming was because of come from Budapest, Hungary. I understand Peter was greatly badly hit because of it, le Carr states. The script ought to be appreciated like a monument for their collaboration as well as their marriage. Their finest interact continues to be memorialised on the watch's screen. It caused what most known as the wedding moment in the BAFTAs last week when Straughan stated of O’Connor throughout his acceptance speech:She did all of the good bits, I made the coffee. I really like you, I miss you,to you. Straughan — who started his career like a playwright before becoming certainly one of Britains most searched for-after screenwriters, with credits such as the Debt andThe Males Who Stare At Goat's –says he and O’Connor were on vacation once they got a phone call from Working Title asking when they desired to adapt Mess Tailor. Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon) authored an authentic draft, getting pitched a movie version to the organization already. Nobody was pleased with Morgans thriller-ant take. Straughan confesses he and OConnor were nervous about adapting Mess Tailor particularly when the 70s BBC Tv show am legendary. Le Carrs jobs are fiendishly hard to adapt: The plot from the 1974 novel frequently happens within the mind of George Smiley, a upon the market spymaster hunting the traitor within the British Secret Service, and it is mostly told in lengthy flashbacks. We wondered when they would perform a silly, sexy upgrading from it with vehicle chases but we understood Tomas Alfredson (Let the correct one In) had been attached as director, that was enticing,” Straughan states. “Le Carr had also given his blessing, to ensure that settled us lower. Straughan states he and OConnor were thinking about the core concerns from the novel, particularly the human price of the Cold War, which comprises the emotional heart from the books labyrinth. Which was what we should attempted to carry to, always returning towards the sufferers some way, he states. The pair experienced it, developing a master synopsis that went to some scroll of 5 recorded-together pages. They set to operate alternating moments, from time to time calling le Carr for advice. Straughan states le Carr urged these to result in the film from the film, not the film from the book. Indeed, the writer was less reverential concerning the novel compared to what they were, encouraging these to invent new moments, and consequently, the script moved farther away from it with every draft. My principle, that we enunciated at our first meeting before they set pen to paper, was that i'm a passive resource. Should you hit an issue or wish to expand a concept, you call me, le Carr states. And, as though styling the books twists, turns and doublings-back wasn't enough, Straughan and OConnor added their very own flashback: a Holiday party scene where all of the spies are collected. The concept sprang from an anecdote le Carr, who used to dedicate yourself British Intelligence, said excitedly about police being known as to interrupt up an MI5 Holiday party which had become too rowdy, with bottles being hurled in to the street. People who reside in the key world absolutely let their head of hair lower whether they have an event, the previous spook states. A lot inhibition for 364 days of the season who knows the other peoples jobs are. Its an enormous release. Le Carr takes note of contacting Working Title partner Tim Bevan after he browse the first draft, telling him how pleased he was: After I read Bridget and Peters first draft, it had been a bit of dramatic and intellectual architecture which i could admire. Immediately it had been obvious theyd done the impossible — lowering the cow to some stock cube. The novelist confesses he is not pleased with other movie adaptations: Eight of his 22 books have finally been shot, with three others modified for television. Anton Corbijn (Control) intends to film A Popular Guy next. The Searching Glass War was absolutely dreadful, as the Little Drummer Girl would be a total failure in each and every sense, le Carr states. Straughan and OConnor, however, provided a seamless collaboration. … I believe they made it happen wonderfully. (Peter Straughan and Oldman/le Carr photos: Getty Images)

Study Charts Actor Diversity on New You'll be able to Stages
Jeremy Lin has many fans inside the theater. The NY Knicks point guard was the talk of RepresentAsian: The Changing Face of Theatre, a roundtable discussion about diversity on NY City stages, presented with the Asian American Artists Action Coalition and Fordham College."I'm thinking about how easy it's to overlook somebody," mentioned playwright David Henry Hwang, who moderated the panel of 18 notable agents, casting company company directors, stars, company company directors, artistic company company directors, plus much more at Fordham University's Pope Auditorium on Monday evening. "It doesn't help anybody whenever we don't have equal access."Access, not outcome, was the central problem in the evening, as well as the event coincided while using relieve research, completed by AAPAC, planning the representation of minority groups on Broadway and NY's 16 most prominent non-profit theaters within the 2006/07 -2010/11 theater seasons.Asian Us citizens were really the only ethnic group to express no in representation over that time, from landing three percent of roles in 2006-07 to 2 percent this season-11. African Us citizens saw a spike in the amount of parts from 9 % to fourteen percent inside the same period, and Latino artists accomplished smaller sized growth, from 2 to 3 percent. Not remarkably, Caucasians will be the only ethnicity to around-represent, with eighty percent of roles on Broadway and non-profits prone to white-colored/non-Hispanic stars. Only 61.six percent in the tri-condition population identifies as white-colored."It's truly about access," mentioned panelist Mary McColl, executive director of Actors' Equity. "Making certain the very best people enter the audition room must be great audition can transform any particular item on stage."Nancy Piccione, casting director for your Manhattan Theatre Club, also sights granting admission as her role on the way. "My job just like a casting director is always to bring stars of races and ethnicities to the audition room," she mentioned. However, if you have been hurdles that unprivileged must overcome beyond getting inside the room. Playwright Douglas Carter Beane ("Sister Act," "Lysistrata Manley") states many company company directors and authors are extremely close-minded if the involves casting non-typically. Beane advised playwrights to create options for individuals stars, particularly in world premiere productions, since the original cast frequently inadvertently becomes site for individuals future stagings. "What continues because room when you're not there's unbelievable," Beane referred to. "I encourage other playwrights, because god, we have a great deal energy, to keep an objective balance.InchFor non-traditional casting, certain groups might be overlooked. In line with the study, 9 % of accessible roles on NY stages were cast colorblindly, in addition to people available roles, Asian American stars showed up 1.2 percent inside the 2010-2011 theater season. African Us citizens introduced with 6.one percent and Latino artists carried out 2.7 percent of people parts inside the same period."Nowadays that people are coming up with, we can not view race as so primary it triumphs over the means by which we suspend our disbelief once we go to the theater," contended Oskar Eustis, artistic director in the Public Theater. The diversity in the theatergoing audience was another subject, elevated by producer Nelle Nugent ("Stick Fly," "Ghetto Klown"). "Everyone else is vital to opening this up," mentioned Nugent, remarking that audiences mostly are white-colored. However, producer Steven C. Byrd has additionally do this.InchShould you create a area, they'll come," mentioned Byrd, who produced Tennessee Williams' "Cat around the Hot Container Roof" on Broadway getting a black cast which is getting Williams' "Streetcar Named Desire," getting a multiracial cast, to Broadway this Spring. "They all are tales that are strongly related anybody," Byrd mentioned backstage. "Who not know, white-colored or black, a dysfunctional family?"Casting director Stephanie Klapper mentioned she's found better results casting non-typically for regional theaters, and in line with the study, Asian American stars were more vulnerable to be cast in Shakespeare or musicals. "All of people things require skill," Beane mentioned, and Byrd contended that non-traditional casting increases results for contemporary plays."It is not about just casting Asians for Asians' sake," mentioned actor Pun Bandhu, who presently appears in "Wit" on Broadway. "It comes down lower to casting the most effective actor for your role."However, Asian Us citizens haven't made as much noise in regards to the representation problem as African Us citizens, and apart from Hwang, Asian stars do not have the same prominent playwrights, for instance Lorraine Hansberry and August Wilson, to produce the various on their own account.Artist is an additional problem, as much ethnic stars result in the pilgrimage out west because the options might be greater. "It seems just like the theater in the last five years, we've virtually release stars generally,Inch mentioned casting director Tara Rubin, adding that projects lately have smaller sized casts for financial reasons. "People round the margins would be the initial to vanish.InchWhilst there's nobody treatment for the problem, panelists suggested putting more unprivileged on non-profit theater boards, being careful of recent playwrights, and raising money.Or everyone can just board the Linsanity bandwagon.InchDoes anybody know when the next Knicks game is?" asked for Hwang, overall the almost 3-hour discussion. "We'll do that and we'll go for more Asians to the theater."

New release date for The Wolverine
Given the off-again on-again nature of X-Men Origins sequel The Wolverine, we'd almost given up on seeing Hugh Jackman don the claws again for another big screen outing.Indeed, The Wolverine has undergone so many false starts that it must surely be regarded as the new go-to example for explaining the phrase "development hell".Adverse weather conditions, directors with cold feet, scheduling conflicts... you name it, The Wolverine has endured it. However, there does finally seem to be some light at the end of the tunnel, with Fox announcing an official release date for the superhero sequel. That date is 26 July 2013, giving director James Mangold a year at most to get the film in the can. Given that Jackman has also yet to shoot Les Miserables, that seems like quite a squeeze, but hopefully it shouldn't detract from the end product too much. The latest draft of the script has been penned by Mark Bomback, and will see an amnesia-suffering Wolverine heading to Japan to find answers concerning his past. Whilst there he falls in love and finds himself tangling with a powerful warrior known as the Silver Samurai. We really do hope the new release date sticks this time around, although given the project's troubled history, we won't be holding our breath...[brightcove]970188212001[/brightcove]

Dissecting Alcatraz's Mysteries: Who Are the '63s?
Sarah Jones and Jorge Garcia From the purveyor of mystery series that keep audiences scratching their heads - Alias and Rambaldi, Lost and the island, Felicity and her hair - J.J. Abrams has debuted another mystifying series, Alcatraz. The new show focuses on the notorious San Francisco prison. It's 1963, and more than 300 guards and prisoners vanish into thin air. In each episode, one of these hardened criminals, called "the '63s," will reappear in 2012 without having aged. San Francisco cop Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones), Diego Soto (Lost alum Jorge Garcia) - an academic who's an expert on The Rock - federal Agent Emerson Hauser (Sam Neill) and his mysterious associate Lucy Banerjee (Parminder Nagra) team up to find them before they can enact their anachronistic justice. Alcatraz's J.J. Abrams: New Fox drama is on an island, but it's not Lost Along the way, Alcatraz will raise questions. Namely, where did they disappear to, and who's pulling the strings behind their reappearance? To keep track of the questions and attempt to find insight into what could be the answers, we've compiled a list of the big mysteries Alcatraz introduced in the two-hour series premiere. Where did the '63s go when they disappeared? Some 302 criminals and guards mysteriously disappeared on March 21, 1963, forcing Alcatraz to close its doors as a maximum-security prison and U.S. government (in Alcatraz's fictional world) to create a huge cover-up by falsifying transfer papers, and eventually death certificates, for each of the missing people. Now, after nearly 50 years, they're seemingly returning to the present with a mission. Who is behind their disappearance and what is their ultimate goal?Upon their return, the criminals - at least the first one, Jack Sylvane (Jeffrey Pierce) - were given the tools needed to assimilate to the real world. Not only did Jack seek his own form of revenge by murdering E.B. Tiller (Jason Butler Harner) - the long-ago deputy warden of Alcatraz who kept him from seeing his wife on visitor's day, which lead to their divorce - but, under their orders, he tracked down a peculiar key, which looked similar to the key that unlocked the prison to the yard in the second hour. Why don't the '63s remember where they were for a half century? In the premiere's second hour, Banerjee questions Sylvane on his whereabouts during those missing years. He says he doesn't know. It seems like he's telling the truth - not just because the lie-detector machine says so, but because we come to discover that Lucy is also one of the '63s and even she seems to be unaware of where they had been. Exclusive: Eric Johnson, Michael Eklund head to Alcatraz How did Dr. Lucy Banerjee come to work with Emerson Hauser?Once a psychiatrist on Alcatraz, Lucy now helps Hauser track down the reappearing criminals, one of which shot her in the second hour and left her in a coma. Did Lucy know Hauser when they worked on the island? Or did they meet after she reappeared? The pair shared a moment before her shooting that may indicate a former relationship - he was especially distressed when she was shot. Why are the '63s after Lucy? Before the two-hour series premiere ended, she was already in a coma, shot by Ernest Cobb (Joe Egender), a '63 who was a former sniper. Is her compliance with Hauser the reason she's a target? Or is she withholding information about the 63s that we'll come to learn later? Or did Cobb just want to kill her because he was forced to be treated by her in the '60s? How did Emerson Hauser know that the '63s would return? While the obvious answer could be that when Lucy returned she told Hauser the rest of the '63s would eventually reappear, Alcatraz doesn't seem like a series that would be predictable. Plus, Hauser is so insistent on keeping pertinent information from Madsen and Soto that could help them in their quest to track down the '63s, so he's obviously hiding something. Why were the Alcatraz doctors stockpiling the prisoners' blood, and how did Madsen's grandfather know there was something terrible going to happen on the island? After the prison's doctor drained several pints of blood from Jack, a mysterious prisoner, known then as Inmate 2002, mentioned that things are much worse "downstairs." It turns out, the man who foresaw their fate is actually Detective Madsen's grandfather, Thomas Madsen (David Hoflin), whom she had unknowingly chased earlier in the premiere, leading to her partner's death. Get scoop on all the midseason shows Where are the guards who also disappeared in 1963?So far, we've only seen prisoners. Are they keeping the guards from returning to the present? Or did they already kill them off because the guards were unlikely to help in their mission? Why does Hauser have a duplicate Alcatraz prison in the middle of the forest to hold the '63s? Obviously, they can't let these prisoners assimilate into present-day prisons, but it seems as though Hauser is getting his own form of revenge by locking them up together. Is Hauser just angry over losing his co-workers or did the '63s do something else to him? What burning questions do you have about Alcatraz? And will you be tuning in to find out the answers? Alcatraz airs Mondays at 9/8c on Fox.

Game on for Sony handheld Vita
Sony isn't ready to give up on the mobile gaming biz just yet.Eager for a popular handheld version of its PlayStation 3 videogame console, Sony revs up a marketing blitz today from the Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas, for its Vita arriving at U.S. retailers on Feb. 22. The handheld gaming device replaces the PSP, which didn't catch on with consumers as much as Sony had hoped seven years ago, and already bowed in Japan in December. Timing could be an issue for Vita's success, however. The Vita, priced from $249 to $299, comes as more consumers are turning to cheaper alternatives like their smartphones and tablets to play inexpensive games such as "Angry Birds," "Words With Friends" and "The Sims Social." As a result, analysts question whether there's still a market for a dedicated gaming device when other handsets are packing larger screens with the Internet and cell service.Sony isn't deterred. It has sold nearly 80 million PSPs and PSP Go devices since late 2004. And Nintendo is still doing brisk business with its DS-line of handhelds, which debuted the same year."The mobile market is ripe for a new gaming opportunity," said John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America. "We see it as the best handheld gaming device ever launched."Sony is certainly backing up its claims. The company is expected to pony up its largest marketing campaign for the Vita since launching the PlayStation 3 and PSP.And it's turning to CES to make a big splash for the product through demos at the Sony booth, where it will have around 30 Vitas to play with."CES is a very critical platform for us," Koller told Variety while on set in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to film a commercial for Vita's upcoming campaign. "The opportunity that it presents to discuss with the media but also analysts and key partners is unmatched." Sony used CES to showcase the PSP in 2005. Sony will need the hype. During its first week of sales in Japan, the Vita moved 320,000 units, 72,000 units in week two and 42,648 units in the third, although analysts aren't disappointed by that result. Nintendo's 3DS sold 370,000 units in its first week, dropping to 210,000 in its second. It has since moved more than 4 million units in Japan, after a price cut from $250 to $170 in the U.S. Mobile is key to PlayStation's future as a brand, given that its core gamers spend 80% of their time outside the home in the U.S., Koller said. "We view mobile and handheld gaming as critically important overall, but within PlayStation it's uber important. We need to have a forum to continue to provide PlayStation content where they go."There's certainly a lot of ground for Sony to make up. By the end of 2011, nearly 58% of portable games in the U.S. were played on mobile devices that operate on Google's Android or Apple's iOS platform, according to research firm Flurry Analytics. Nintendo's DS line owned 36% of the market, with the PSP taking up the rear at 6%, down from 9% in 2010 and 11% in 2009.On a revenue basis, an estimated $3.3 billion was spent on portable games in 2011, according to Flurry, with Nintendo earning $1.2 billion and cell phones taking in $1.9 billion. That's a switch from $1.9 billion in 2009 for Nintendo and $500 million for Google and Apple that same year. But in designing the Vita, Sony stuck with a familiar format -- it resembles the PSP but boasts a better screen and graphics, along with other capabilities."We asked ourselves, 'How do we create content that's related to PlayStation that's not a tablet?'" Koller said.Although skeptics in the games biz worry that Sony is outpricing itself with the Vita and its games, SCEA has a certain consumer in mind. It views the Vita as a "premium product" that falls within the handheld gaming and mobile portfolios. The 5-inch OLED touchscreen features HD resolution that's more colorful and brighter than the PSP and senses motion and allows for augmented reality gameplay, while the devices also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optional 3G. The Vita drops PSP's UMD discs for flash memory sticks, or the PlayStation Vita card, to play movies and store information. Top titles to launch, and priced between $40-$50, initially include "ModNation Racers: Road Trip," "Uncharted: Golden Abyss," "Reality Fighter," "Army Corps of Hell," WipeOut 2048," " Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational" "Michael Jackson: The Experience," "Plants vs. Zombies," "Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3" and "FIFA Soccer." That kind of capability comes with a higher pricetag."The Vita, in many ways, is a PlayStation 3 in your pocket," Koller said. "It will be the most powerful mobile device on the market for the next few years that will be able to stream movies, music and photos on an HD screen." AT&T is providing the Wi-Fi and 3G accessibility, through which Sony wants to eventually offer high-end, graphically rich games -- the kind that are familiar to PS3 owners. It found that lowering the price of its PSP too soon lowered the average age of its typical user."The PSP consumer was someone that aged down very quickly" to an average age of 12-14 within two-and-a-half years, Koller said. With the Vita, SCEA is targeting PlayStation 3's core consumer of males in their mid-20s with a large amount of discretionary income and are typically early adopters, rabid for new technology."Reaching them on this device where they're more apt to spend their money is critical," Koller. That's because Vita will tap into the growing pot of digital dollars the gaming industry is increasingly turning to. When attending a baseball game, for example, the Vita will unlock jerseys left for fans at various stadiums. Apps will also enable users to go on treasure hunts throughout a city or venue, while others will reveal other players in the area and their capabilities. The Vita "was designed as a social medium and I believe it will be used that way," Koller said. The PSP wasn't. Sony is cautious not to replicate what occurred with the PSP, which wound up being dubbed "PlayStation Personal" because users "weren't interacting with anyone," Koller said.Naturally, the Vita will also incorporate video services like Netflix and Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Skype. But apps will be tweaked to fit with Sony's push for social interaction. "Vita is designed to be completely the opposite," he added. "We're not interested in throwing something that's already on your phone onto Vita. We want apps to be unique to Vita. When you take the Vita out in the world it affects your gaming and who you're playing with and engaging with."Either way, that social element is expected to be a large part of Vita's marketing campaign and message coming out of CES and the focal point of its meetings with developers, app makers and other content partners during the show."We don't always have a chance to meet with all of them and fly around the world," Koller said. "CES provides that opportunity."Game on for VitaSony wants a bigger piece of Nintendo's handheld gaming biz as it tries to launch a mobile version of its PlayStation 3 console with Vita.Nintendo DS149 million units sold since November 2004Nintendo DS Lite93.4 million units sold since March 2006 Sony PSP71.4 million units sold from December 2004-September 2011Nintendo DSi25.6 million units sold since November 2008Nintendo DS XL11.1 million units sold since November 2009Nintendo 3DS8 million units sold since February 2011 Contact Marc Graser at marc.graser@variety.com
